The Web Standards Awards : 100 sites : Jan 03 2009

Web Design / 4 comments

BANG!

It seems that – after 5 years online – www.webstandardsawards.com has finally disappeared completely. Sigh. All those dead links …

The site actually stopped featuring new websites in 2006, with just the 100 winners displayed along with the message:

“As a testament to the work of the pioneers who we applauded, this site will remain open as a record of 100 sites that helped shape a period in the Internet’s development that we were - and still are - excited to be a part of.”

In July 2005, I was lucky enough to win a web standards award for this very website (number 86 in the list). It was a real honour, and I’m a little sad that the website is now nothing more than an <iframe> advertising hosting and such. But hey. Change happens and things move on.

I also feel it is a shame for all the other 99 websites, so here is a list of them all in order of their inclusion on the website. Many have now changed or no longer exist, and some – dare I say it – have obviously changed hands and are now quite shocking in terms of their design and in terms of web standards HTML and such:

COMMENTSCOMMENTS

  1. Nice idea. As you say, it’s a real shame to see the site is no more as I felt as though it was a cut above the majority of the gallery style websites you see around.

  2. Hello buddy,

I like the way you did your site, which is quite opposite of my type of work which is I like to do more sharp and clean stuff.

Anyway, it's good to see some interesting, creative (out of the box) stuff.

Great work. Keep it up :)

  3. Hey Kev, I found this page while searching for PGA site that was featured in the Web Standards Awards. Which is kind of ironic, because I was one of the founders of the awards :)

I had no idea that the site had disappeared, I'll have to chase it up and see what happened ...

Anyway, thanks for providing this resource, hopefully your site will be longer lasting than ours.

  4. @ Cameron : Thanks for stopping by. Ryder Cup fever initiate the search? :)

Whilst I understand entirely the decision to stop at 100, I have to admit that I was a little surprised to see the the WSA site expire in such a way.

When I got featured I was really over the moon, and felt very proud. It gave me some much needed confidence, and was a little spring-board for me to push-on with my business and in my practice. So I'm very grateful to the WSA site, and also Mr. Oxton, for seeing something worthwhile in my website at that time.
